Pop up Art Gallery to showcase the work of North Coast artists

The Gallery, a pop up Art Gallery and Exhibition, is set to open at Lifestyle Centre in Ballito on 11 December 2020.

The plans for The Studios, opposite Weylandts, to host a number of smaller bespoke line shops and fitness studios, were unable to be brought to fruition due to the impact of the coronavirus and lockdown earlier in the year, but owner of Lifestyle Centre, Bruce Rencken, came up with the idea to utilise the space to showcase the work of the local art community. Local artist Jane Digby, with the assistance of fellow creative, Leigh Bisset, have curated a number of North Coast and KZN artists, sculptors and ceramicists to exhibit their work to the community of the North Coast and to the many visitors and holiday makers who will be visiting Ballito over December/January and Easter periods.

“Bruce Rencken has offered local artists the most incredible opportunity to exhibit in The Gallery, a magnificent, industrial space of about 600m2, ideally positioned opposite Weylandts and close to the many restaurants on Eat Street,” Digby excitedly explained. “This will provide a much-needed platform for local artists to showcase their talent, at the same time nurturing the enjoyment and appreciation of arts and culture on the Dolphin Coast. It’s almost too incredible to believe that artists will finally have a platform such as this – it really is a dream come true!”

Ardmore Ceramics will also have a shop within The Gallery, drawing even greater interest and elevating the profile. A small coffee station will be positioned in The Gallery, creating an atmosphere where people can relax and admire artworks in between shopping at the array of unique stores, or enjoying a meal at any of the fine eateries, within Lifestyle Centre.

The key aims of The Gallery, according to Digby, are:

  • to create a highly professional, contemporary gallery “Artists Collective” of artists with a wide range of genre and medium.
  • to provide the public with a showcase of artworks created by KZN artists, particularly those on the Dolphin Coast.
  • to create an enticing vibe, where people wish to meet, view art and talk art.
  • to create a workshop space on the mezzanine for interactive art sessions, workshops/demonstrations and small functions such as poetry readings and book launches, giving young talent an opportunity to show and share their talents whilst entertaining a wide variety of ages.

“The Gallery at The Studios will provide a platform for local artists to showcase their talent and expand their careers via an expansive and professional exhibition space,” said Rencken. “It will be a spacious, inviting and interactive gallery for locals and visitors to Ballito to observe, appreciate and obtain the finest artworks from local artists on the Dolphin Coast and beyond, as well as to gather to enjoy creative workshops or simply relax with a cup of coffee.”

The Festive Season Exhibition will run from 11 December 2020 till 27 January 2021, after which another exhibition will run until the end of April.

The Gallery launches at 5pm on 10 December 2020 for invited guests and will be open daily from 11 December from 9am to 7pm, with the exception of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
